Chronic dry scalp and what I know to do about it.
I’ve been dealing with a chronically dry scalp since, like, forever. My parents used to give me hot oil treatments, sometimes they’d scrub my scalp with a comb and mix mouthwash into shampoo (OUCH! Do not effing do this) and a whole bunch of other things. These used to work, but not for very long and sometimes they made the problem even worse.
Now, there are a slew of different names for conditions that dry scalp is either a condition of or is caused by depending on what it looks like. These could be seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, dandruff (which is actually more fungal) or even sunburn.
These are the products that I KNOW work relatively long term (1-2 months):
I like to start by giving my scalp the deepest cleansing it can get.
The Malibu C scalp Wellness kit is my first go to. I do two shampoos. One to get everything loose, one to wash it away. Be sure to scrub vigorously, and really get it all up.
This kit also includes their miracle scalp treatment that removes product buildup, and mineral deposits (from hard water or sweat) right out of the follicle! I do this right after shampooing, and add a little heat too.
I have to admit, this one isn’t my favorite but it is effective!
When I use the Malibu kit pictured above, I do that shampoo once, then follow with this one. This one is medicated and has peppermint and tea tree oil. While these are great cleansing agents and they do provide a nice tingle that you and your scalp will LOVE, it can leave the hair a little dry. Just a little. The scalp will be FABULOUS though. I recommend following with a hydrating deep conditioner.
The scrub is important!
This shampoo has microexfoliating beads to help lift up scalp flakes, charcoal to detoxify the scalp and wash away impurities and add moisture with coconut oil. It’s a sure fire way to get that scalp flake free and clean.
Perfect for thinning hair!
Tackle two issues in one with this invigorating scalp scrub from Nutrafol. Specifically formulated for thinner hair, this mask will ensure your scalp is not only clean and medicated to keep away dry scalp but also to encourage thicker, fuller hair!
